Hey all. Does anyone have a tried & true method for gettin' dirt on the sides of a 4x4 that looks real?

Larry on my Bronco and the S-10 i just used good ole Viginia dirt ground up some added water to taste and used a toothbrush to spray the mud on it just kinda threw it in the direction i thought the tire would throw it just dip the tip of the toothbrush and using you finger rake the top of the brush to make it spray on the body as for dirt i think just some good weathering powders like those from Bragdon available through Walthers could be used too but im sure others here have better ideas since those for now have been the only two i've done anything like that to Willie

Hey, Larry. The techniques you choose depends on the the type of dirt you want to represent. For typical off-roadin' mud, Willie's technique works well. For thick southern-gumbo mud, you'll need a thicker paste made from tube acrylics mixed w/baking soda, salt, or plaster of Paris flicked on by the toothbrush method Willie described. You can throw in some scale "grass" from the model railroad section for texture and that "way out in the boonies" look. For general weathering you can get the powders, but I've always used sandpapered artist's pastel sticks with good results. You get what you pay for here, so don't go too cheap, but a little goes a long way. If you just want a light patina of neglect, a light dusting of Dull Coat will knock some of the shine off. Check out some of the armor modeler's sites for more weathering ideas. They have lots!

Thanks Willie...Rod. I got dirty tires so I wanted to plant a little dirt on the side of the truck...just a little kicked up from the tires...nothin' to drastic.

Larry, there is a GREAT tutorial in S.A., Volume 31, issue 6, dated April 2010.
C. Kemp mudded up a 1972 Chevy push-truck very realistically.
I can scan the pages if you'd like?
