New guy here and I wanted to drop in and say hi and tell you all how impressed I am with the site and the members' work here. I have read most of the posts here in the last couple days, I think. It's been very inspiring and encouraging.
I have done models off and on since i was 8 or 9, and that's a LONG time ago. I one do maybe 1-2 kits a year, and never much beyond stock except maybe paint or body mods (chopped tops, flip noses, etc). I have the technical skills and the "craft" mind, as well as a steady hand and an ingenuity to make new parts or mod old parts. What I haven't had in the past was patience and focus on a model that inspired me enough and, unlike many of you, I didn't have the patience to build every model to GREATNESS.
Last spring I bought a 1980 Jeep CJ7 (1:1) after months of thinking about what I wanted while on deployment on a carrier. Now, as I start building that Jeep to what I want it to be (reasonably) over the months and dream of what I wish I could build it as, I decided it was time for a model.
I went on eBay and immediately discovered than a new kit could be pretty high, but I was able to get two kits (different releases) from the same seller really cheap and had only been opened and a couple pieces removed from sprues, but not built any. Perfect!
So now I turn to the internet and you great builders out there for resources and tricks and encouragement. I hope to make this a great couple builds and continue on from there.
Already my boys are, of course, enthusiastic about models and have done a few of their own with me, and now the older (16) is helping his little brother (9)... so I'd like to see that grow. Thanks for a great site and great group of people.
