No, Ford won't build you a regular cab short bed Super Duty, but many companies and private individuals will gladly do so for you. And since I had a spare Maisto/Testors "1:24" scale diecast/plastic kit, I thought I might build one, too. The local body shop used one as their main vehicle for a few years- I only managed to get a couple of pics of it. This truck was sold many years back. My take so far... The bed on this kit is actually plastic, but it's thick (we're talking about 1/8" or so), so cutting it was fairly straightforward. I did not measure- I just sort of 'eyeballed' and went from there. There was no fuel filler door on the Maisto bed, so I think I just might not add one to my new short bed either. Thinking about modifying or replacing the kit chassis, so I can add a lifted chassis with better axle detail.

Just had to see how she'd look up on wheels. Note... never test fit the wheels on this kit to the axle stubs unless you trim off the pointed ends, otherwise the wheels are never coming off without cutting the mounting stubs! The grille/bumper may or may not end up on it- it's another Testors/Maisto kit part I'm in the process of modifying to a 2005-07 version.

Dug it out after a year and piddled with it a bit. Since I'm really not digging the proportions of the body, I decided to have a little more fun with it than I'd originally planned. Enter the wheels and tires from a Revell Uptown kit... I think these came from the diecast Escalade, but I have no idea. They do appear to have an 8-bolt pattern in the hub anyway.

Interior's done... not that there's much there. I did add a shifter from an AMT Ranger. I also replaced the amorphous blob that Maisto called the steering wheel with one pirated from a Revell '97 F-150. Also finished the paint, and got some of the little pieces attached. Paint is Testors One Coat Lime Ice (left over from the '97 I finished recently) and Firey Orange. The barbed wire pinstripe came from the Monogram F-250 reissue. Not an exact match for the old Kirby truck, but I wasn't going for an exact duplicate, so it's all good.

I made up some "inner fenders" for the front- otherwise, you can see straight through the engine bay when you look at the model from the side. I had to do the same for the bed, as I did not use the kit supplied floor and sides. A block off panel for the grille will also be made and installed. I also decided to use the comically oversized brake rotors from the Escalade- combined with the inner fenders (painted flat black), they conspire to help conceal the crude chassis.
