This is one of a half-dozen scale projects ongoing at my house...trying to replicate my 1974 J20 pickup. Here's a lousy, scanned pic of my J20. Don't have any current digital pics of it, the thing is piled high with stuff in the garage for now, maybe it'll see daylight in the spring! Bought this Arizona desert truck in 2000, haven't done alot to it since, so it still looks the same other than being 3" lower after I removed the crappy body lift and put an original chrome bumper back up front.
Here's the kit I'm using:
If you've never seen or built one of these kits, they leave quite a bit to be desired, although I'm thankful to have a fair replica of a FSJ to work with to avoid a total scratchbuild! Here's an old gluebomb that I picked up from eBay years ago, mocked up with Ma's Resin 35" BFG mud-terrains, showing that they don't look too bad built up, but my 3/4 ton has an 8' bed, different grille, and other differences requiring modifications, scratchbuilding, & kitbashing:
and a bottom shot:
The over-simplified one-piece body from the kit:
Lack of detail/accuracy underhood:
At least the frame is separate, but for my replication will require lengthening. I'll build proper body mounts and other frame details as I go, I've got accurate reference material! ;D
A scratchbuilt grille will be in order also, the kit grille replicates 1979-up:
The body looks more accurate already, just cutting the bed from the cab:
next up, bed lengthening, building a rear cab wall and floors for both...
