I just read through the post. (I don't hang out on any other model forum besides this one so I hadn't seen it.) I have to agree with you on all counts. And honestly, this thing about not picking up a model to judge it is pretty stupid. If you are building a model to enter in a contest, it had better be assembled well enough to not fall apart by a judge gingerly picking it up. (And I'm assuming judges are model builders so they 'get it' with regards to care. I remember years ago when I used to read Scale Auto, that there were a lot of problems with contests/judging. Looks like nothing has changed.

I just read it too Matt...man o' man did that take off! I knew you'd be accused of whining for not winning. Not your point at all. I've never been to an IPMS event, but I undrstand what you were trying to convey, although your concerns did branch off into different avenues and get misconstrued (?) as to what you were originally talking about. And "ditto" on Matt 2's thought that "it better be built well enough.........." . Absolutely.

ed i tried to stay to the original point but people keep bringing up issues that i wasnt even concered with and never talked about in my first statement. maybe im to competive but i dont understand why the judges cant look at the model as a whole and stick to the rules. why even have any rules if they wont be followed. i dont give a care that i didnt win. its not the last show on earth. i just dont like the judging criteria. maybe i should stick to a more friendly site like this

Matt i'll have to agree with you on most of this as well i do go to and prefer the IPMS shows most of them dont have classes for our type of builds here but i do still enjoy going and yes it does seem they are geared more towards the military stuff but i do enjoy looking at those builds some of those guys do some amazing work i do wish like you that they did have more classes geared for the automotive builders as for the picking up thing im kinda up and down on that yes tey should take into consideration what is underneath cause our type of builds here (Off-Road) we do put alot of detail into the chassis and suspension area now i think all of the IPMS shows i've been to on their entry forms theres a box to check to let the judges know weather or to they can handel your build. Now as for the NNL type of shows again i like going to them but i wish there they had more awards for each catagory if not 1st -3rd but a best in each type instead of 4 or 5 awards to be decided among 1000 different builds and we know what usually wins at those but thats to me is a whole new rant LOL take care bud and take that awesome ENVY build to more shows maybe just avoid that particular one Willie

I've been building models for 50 years. I did a couple contests back in the '70s and saw the "honest" judging and that was the last time for me.

When i lived in indianapolis i used to go to all the shows around there because i was a vender, i never put my models in it because there not up to there standards , but i did notice that most of the members in the sponser club would have models in the show, and i would see alot of them win. One thing i think if yopur putting on a show, you should not have your models in the show against everyone else, the judges are your friends so i think they should have a table just for the members of the club to put there models on and let the crowd vote by ballot for the ones they like of the club members.
