I had been in contact with Jeff a few months ago regarding some resin 5-slot wheels which he thought might be a close match to the factory Jeep aluminum 5-slot wheels, but I don't think they were close enough, going on memory.
I don't dabble in 4x4 and off-road wheels too much and make mostly 2WD hot rod and classic mag type wheels in resin, but I have made some modified copies of the eight-spoke, eight-lug wagon wheels from the MPC Jeep Commando kit, and now I'm trying to make so 4x4 type 5-slot wheels, using a different wheel as the base. Granted, these still have five lugs, but when I find a suitable center hub with either eight or six lugs, I can fit those to these wheels.
Anyhow, I guess I'm looking for some feedback as far as what people like to see in 4x4/off-road wheels, and what the preferred tires are, as I like to size the wheels I make to available tires. I have some Desert Dog PCVs from the COmmando kit and some Goodyear Wrangler tires from various Revell and AMT kits, but little else. I am aware of the excellent ORTD (Off-Road Tire Database), so I will use that whenever possible to correctly size the wheels I am making.
Here are some pics of the 5-slot wheels I'm working on now, which I designed to fit the Formula Desert Dog PCV tires from the Commando kit. I've made them as a modular, three-piece setup, so the outer and inner wheel rims can be swapped, depending upon your wheel offset preferences. I will probably cast these as two pieces once I have both deep and shallower wheel fronts cast as one piece with the wheel center, but maybe I should only make the deep dish version? Are five-lug wheels even worth making, or should any and all off-road type wheels be of the six-or eight-lug variety?
On with the pics:
