Interesting... I have seen trucks with worse rust brought back to life. Heck, I have seen worse rust driving around here.
Tell me about that "yellow motor" under the mud flap. I have to admit that I know very little about Scouts but I am willing to bet that the diesel is not factory. John

Nope... that's actually a Nissan unit. The SD 33, which became available as an option in either '76 or '77. It was available until 1979, for 1980 it was replaced with the turbocharged SD 33T. It's backed up by a Chrysler 727 auto, which was also available with the IH and AMC sourced engines (though I think by '78 IH had stopped using the 258 Jeep six).
They aren't great engines- very little power, and they had a nasty reputation for spitting head gaskets and developing cracks in the cylinder walls, heads, and pistons. Forget about towing anything at speeds over 55, too... these things were slugs, engineered more to conserve fuel than anything else.Today, they're just about impossible to find parts for. In Europe, some Scout II diesel owners actually replace these engines with the diesels from the Nissan Patrol. I think mine will end up with a good old IH 345... still not the greatest engine ever, but a step up from the diesel, anyway!
