Back when I regularly built models, we used Brasso metal polish. It takes the chrome off pretty well with just a little elbow grease and a toothbrush and maybe a toothpick for the more stubborn areas, and it doesn't harm the plastic. You will have to wash the part thoroughly to get the yellow residue off afterward (use another clean toothbrush), but all in all it's a pretty straight-forward process. There might be a better way these days, though.

Hey Ben. I use a little laundry bleach. Sometimes the chrome is gone in minutes. Then I wash in soap & water.

I've been using Purple Power cleaner/degreaser with good, and fast, results.

I use Purple Power. I put the parts in a gallon ziplock freezer bag and soak overnight. Then I pour the purple power back into the jug so I can reuse it next time.
Sometimes PP won't get the chrome off, in that case, I'll soak those parts in pure bleach overnight. That always gets the tough stuff.
