A week ago I bought a '78 CJ-5 and I'm trying to figure out some stuff on it. I have determined that is a Golden Eagle. It has a limited slip rearend and either a posi or limited slip front end. I've heard of quadra tracs, but I thought it had a button or lever in the glovebox for that. The engine is supposedly a 304,but it has a lot of power for a 304! It has headers, but that's it. I just can't believe a stock 304 can have that much power! It will roast both rear tires (33X12.50 Thornbirds) on blacktop on a whim. It may have a small cam,but it's not noticable at all. The thing that has me baffled is the tranfer case. It has 4 different gears in it. It has 4-H at the top, then 2H,then 2L and 4L. The first time I tried it out,I thought I had it in 4L,but soon found out that the front wheels weren't pulling. My first thought was "OH NO!! the 4wd doesn't work in 4L!!" I grabbed the shifter and pulled it down another notch and viola, both front tires started digging and slinging mud everywhere! I've never seen or even heard of a tranfer case with 4 different speeds, but I'm not that educated on 4WD's. Also the knob on the shifter doesn't indicate a 2L,just 4H,2H and 4L. Anyone know anything about this transfer case? Any info anyone can give me will be appreciated.

Congrats Roger! you know we'll need pics I can help with the engine...Look on the driver's side of the block, in the vicinity of the motor mount bosses. The displacement numbers are raised castings on the block. I think the numbers are around 1/2" to 3/4" high also, so they're easily seen (unless it's caked in grease/mud) If the valve covers are original, there is an ID tag at the front of the right cover that will encode what you have also, and will coincide with numbers within the VIN. But the valve covers are so easily changed, and fit all AMC engines from 290 to 401, so the block ID is the way to go for sure. A healthy 304 in a lightweight CJ-5 will have lots of power, but I'm hoping someone transplanted a 360 or better yet a 401 in there! ;D My J20 has the original 401, and its very STRONG! Same thing, will light the tires when the turbo 400 shifts into second, and thats a heavy 3/4 ton As far as the transfer case, it should be a Dana 20 if original. Same thing, there are either cast-in identifiers or a sheet metal ID tag that will show what you have. Definitely NOT a quadra-trac, as they have no shift lever as you say, and it wouldn't have manual hubs up front either. Not exactly sure on the shift pattern, my Dad's 1976 CJ-5 is all original and has the Dana 20, but his Jeep is over 100 miles from me so I can't confirm...I've never heard of a T-case with 2L, but what do I know Here's a link that may help: www.drivetrain.com/parts_catalog/transfer_case_replacements_and_parts/dana_18_20_and_300.htmlSounds cool Roger! I hope some of this info helps...Jeeps are very addictive, and you do know what the acronym stands for don't you? Just Empty Every Pocket Please post some pics in the "reference photos" area when you get a chance

Thanx Jeff, that helps me out some. I just discovered that it does in fact have a 360. I knew that thing had more power than a 304! After trying it out some more,it definitely does have a 2L. It's a good 5-6 inches travel wise on the shifter above 4L. I thought I may not be getting it all of the way into 4L, but that's not the case. It's the same gear ratio (or very close) as 4L,but only 2wd. There's no way to mistake it for 2H.
What bolt pattern does the fan have, Ford or Chevy? I need to get a bigger fan with a clutch for it because it currently has a 4 blade that doesn't do much at low speeds. I don't want to spend the money on an electric fan. I'm planning on fixing it up a little, then resell it.

Thanx Jeff, but I'll be using junk parts for everything possible so that I can keep my investment down as much as possible. When I get it cleaned up and painted,I'll take some photos of it. I gotta get rid of it soon because my son is already getting attached to it. Someone on another board informed me of a kit that will give you a 2L,so I guess that's what it has. I'm going to check into that transfer case kit for my F150 because I would love to have that in it. It's geared pretty high and it doesn't help that it has 31x10.50s on it.

Here's a couple photos of the CJ-5. I won't call it mine since it's going up on Craiglist this weekend. Hopefully it will sell pretty quick.

The old CJ-5 was short lived. Put it on Craigslist Sunday, sold on Tuesday and delivered it on Wednesday. Worst part was that it broke my son's heart when he found out that I had sold it. I wouldn't have thought that he would have gotten attached to it that quick, but he did. I seriously thought about trying to buy it back from the guy I sold it to,but he has big plans for it because he had me deliver it to a shop. I just bought a '97 XJ with a lift and 31x10.50s,but my son doesn't like it because it has a top and doors. I guess I'm gonna have to find another CJ to pacify the little guy. He has spotted one on the way home from school,so I guess I'm gonna have to go check it out to see if the owner wants to sell it.

That CJ looked pretty clean Roger! You must not have asked enough for it if it sold that quick! Your son must be a true Jeeper in the fact that he already recognizes that "real" Jeeps have round headlights Seriously though, XJs and Commanches are cool too

As far as day-to-day utility and practicality, an XJ is the way to go. But there's something about a CJ, especially a CJ5 that is way cool. Enzo Ferrari once said, "The Jeep is America's only true sports car." Even though I believe Mr. E.F. was talking about flatfenders, CJ5s have that same spirit and a funky retro look. I've always wanted to build a resto-rod out of a 5. Period-correct wheels and tires, a small lift with 31" tires max, chrome bumpers, a big-honkin' chrome tach, and goofy touches like one of those Cal Custom barefoot gas pedals, and '64-'66 Mustang tail light bezels, would be fun. The best part is you can buy repro red, white, and blue Super Jeep decals that scream early '70s Peter Max style--super fun. Sadly, I have too many unfinished Jeep projects as it is. But I do have an unbuilt Daisy Duke Jeep sitting on my shelf...

Yeah Jeff,I probably should have held out for more money, but the guy had cash in hand and was the first serious buyer. Had plenty of lookers. I let it go for $2200,so I made a pretty good profit on it. I'm on the lookout for another CJ,but it must have a top and doors. I would have probably kept this one had it had those. I looked for a top and doors, but people were asking 11-12 hundred dollars for them. I only gave 13 for the Jeep and wasn't about to give up almost the same amount of money for a top and doors. I think I want a 7 this time around because the 5 was hard for me to get into with my bad back. It didn't help that the seats set too high either. I'm pretty close to getting my XJ the way I want it. Still a few minor things to do. A buddy at my local garage said he would weld the rearend to make it a posi for $35,so I'm going to have that done. I checked out the Jeep my son wants, but it's not for sale. Plus it's a '57 model with no windshield frame and a bad steering box. I gave the guy my number in case he ever changed his mind. I'll post photos of my XJ when I get it ready to sell.
