i started another project ;D that '66 F250 of Sam Collins is still on my brain and is the reason i started this one too. looking at this kit it looked like a good candidate for the hacked and trimmed back sheetmetal that Sam's truck has. after i cut the front grille piece and was happy with that it just snowballed from there. i started digging around for some good axles and springs and was coming up with nothing really. i remembered i had a couple of Unimog kits stashed away for some future 4x4 projects and that got me the axles i needed and they almost seemed a natural fit. there's no real lift here! the stock F-1 springs are at all 4 corners. the brackets to hold the springs on the Unimog axles were placed to fit to the leaf springs and the rear required a small block or spacer to even things up. i don't really understand how the axles work exactly or how much HP they can handle, but it worked and i like the look of it so far. Now this is going to be interesting as for the Unimog axles not sure about how much power they can stand but they are pretty much bulletproof also how they work i cant really explain it search for portal axles on google or yahoo and you'll find out everything its they same thing(but different) as what the H1 Hummer uses Willie

i went looking for a transfer case for this thing and have come up with nothing but half of a Monogram Blazer case. since i just started building these things i don't have any extra parts. if i can't turn one up somewhere i may just make one instead. the Unimog axles have both center sections over to the drivers side which i think is opposite of what most trucks are?
i don't have any winches either so looks like i'll be attempting to scratchbuild one of those too.

Dave, I've got a few Dana 20s from all of the CJ-7 kits I used to build the Scrambler...I think the NP205 from the Blazer/pickup kits would be a better choice, but if you want a couple of the Jeep cases, let me know. I will be sending Alan an NP205 for duplication soon. As far as winches go, there's a need there, too. The 8274 Warn in the 84 GMC kit isn't bad, much better than the CJ-7 kit attempt We need Jake's (Bigjeepzz) masters!

i sat down this evening and built a winch! i used some pics that Zukiholic had posted over on MCM and decided to just give it a go and see what i could do. fueled by determination and alot of Mountain Dew i got one done in just about 3 hours. i had no idea what i was doing so alot of time was spent looking at pictures and thinking of how to do the next part. i think it turned out okay, definitely better than the one i never finished for a trailer project awhile back. Dave, this is coming along so great! And that winch, I am truly impressed. I think when you look at the pictures of your friends winch, you'll see that you are spot-on with this one. I have a lot to learn

Hey Dave. Ditto on the "3 week" thing. Love the truck...love the winch-absolutely impressed. I was gonna scratch a winch for the Scout. I definitely will get help from your pics. You really did a good job on it. Plus, that's how I started scratchin'...lookin' at pics. Plus #2, I found this spool of thin silver string (not really the right word) at my local fabric shop that looks like winch cable. I'll get a pic. Plus #3...I have one of Willie's Atlas TCs. It's excellent.

Wow, I miss a few days building pinewood derby cars and so many awesome projects show up. Wow! Great job on the winch (and the rest of the truck). John

Here's that string. Maybe a couple light coats of Dullcoat would tone it down a bit.

Ed, thanks for the pics of the silver thread! i'm going to try some braided beading wire i have and hope it works out, if not i'll look for the thread you have shown. not much time over the past few days really to do much, but i found a good powerplant for this thing. a nice solid and dependable 440 should move this truck just fine. kinda plays into that whole thing about what this truck says across the front too. ;D how do i get one of these Atlas transfer cases? Dave
